Saint Nicolas Tower
Saint Nicolas Tower, when history shows up in the heart of the city. Erected in the 14th century, Saint Nicolas Tower is an imposing fortress located on the Old Port of La Rochelle. Along with the Tour de la Chaîne, it’s the gateway to the harbor and for five centuries has ensured the management of trading ships entering its harbor. Along with this architectural structure is the Tour de la Lanterne, which served as a lighthouse and was used to lay up boats upstream from the harbor. Saint Nicolas Tower, which was a detention center and then the royal abode, is now a museum. There you’ll discover large superimposed halls linked to each other through a complex circulation system. Listed as a historical monument in 1879, it’s slightly slanted, with its foundations struggling to keep it upright! Cross the old city and its half-timbered streets and then reach the shops, cafés and restaurants along the Vieux-Port. Have a seat on one of the many terraces and enjoy the remarkable views of marina boats that quietly bump into each other in front of you. On summer evenings, the towers light up and are a theatre of dazzling night shows.
